Duenweg, Missouri – For the second year in a row, PILR Technology Services, one of the area’s
leading technology service companies, is announcing that it will offer assistance free of charge to
area law enforcement agencies in submitting applications for the United States Department of
Justice’s Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program (BVP).
The Office of Justice Program’s (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) administers the BVP
Program. Each year, the program offers a 50% reimbursement to qualified law enforcement
agencies for bulletproof vests. According to DOJ guidelines, applicable groups include: police
officers, sheriff deputies, correctional officers, parole and probation agents, prosecutors, and
judicial officials. It is up to each department to make sure all applications are submitted correctly
with the proper signatures and information within the established deadlines. The funds for this
year’s program may be used towards the purchase of vests ordered on or after April 1, 2008.
It is important for each law enforcement agency to update or submit a new profile before filing an
application for Fiscal Year 2008 funds. Applications must be submitted via the online BVP
system, by 5:00 pm (Eastern Time), Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Each vest purchased with these
funds must meet National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standards. PILR recommends that profiles
should be started no later than April 16th, 2008 in order to meet the April 23, 2008 application
deadline.
According to US Department of Justice’s BVP website, since 1999 over 11,900 jurisdictions have
participated in the BVP Program, with $173 million in federal funds committed to support the
purchase of an estimated 450,000 vests. In 2007, area law enforcement agencies have received
matching funds as follows:
- Arkansas- $266,801/ 1,095 vests
- Missouri-$348,987/ 2,064 vests
- Kansas-$203,827/ 1,021 vests
- Oklahoma-$620,787/ 3,499 vests
